Kate Mercer-Lawson is a seasoned trial lawyer with more than a decade of experience litigating high-stakes matters around the country. She is passionate about justice, service, and grace, drawing on those values in each case. A vibrant storyteller, Kate believes that those wronged by others’ harmful actions deserve to be heard. She is honored that her clients have turned to her in the most devastating moments of their lives.

Kate brings a special viewpoint to Meirowitz & Wasserberg, having served as national trial counsel to several corporations. While successful in those efforts, she could not ignore the calling in her heart to represent individuals. The memory of her grandfather, a refinery worker, motivated her to make the change. Now, she realizes that she was always meant to do plaintiffs’ work. Kate is not afraid of an unfair fight and describes herself as “scrappy,” with a drive that won’t quit. She primarily handles cases involving exposures to asbestos and sexual abuse.

Hailing from the Midwest, Kate earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and religious studies as an Indiana University Wells Scholar, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She holds a Master of Health Administration and Juris Doctor from Indiana University and graduated summa cum laude in both programs. In law school, Kate was editor-in-chief of the Indiana Law Review, a Dean’s Tutorial Society instructor, a study-abroad scholar in Croatia, and a judicial extern to the Honorable David F. Hamilton, then-U.S. Circuit Judge (Seventh Circuit). She was honored with the school’s annual Faculty Prize (to which all faculty personally contribute) for her academic and leadership achievements.

Before entering the private sector, Kate completed four years of government service: two years as law clerk to the Honorable Sarah Evans Barker (U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana) followed by two years as law clerk to the Honorable Jerome A. Holmes (now Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit). She also taught judicial politics and criminal law courses at Indiana University.

Kate then spent a decade working at a nationally recognized law firm in Colorado, where she became a partner. Over the years, she has taken and defended hundreds of depositions, argued motions in court, secured winning jury verdicts, drafted advanced motions in both trial and appellate courts, and supervised attorneys in multiple jurisdictions. Her tenacity often results in uncovering “smoking gun” results that force favorable resolutions. Kate is firmly committed to achieving victories without sacrificing civility and professionalism.

Kate thrives on staying busy in and out of the office. She is particularly proud of her volunteer work as a bone marrow courier for the National Marrow Donor Program and a meal server at the Denver Rescue Mission. She is an avid mentor with organizations like the American Bar Association’s Judicial Opportunities Program and the University of Denver. Kate also loves visiting her family, traveling the world, running, hiking, public speaking, reading, and attending church. She lives in Denver with her husband, Cody, and dog, Thomas.

Kate is admitted to practice law in Indiana, Colorado, Wisconsin, and Utah. Her life motto, borrowed from Erma Bombeck, is “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, ‘I used everything You gave me.’
