What Are the Acadia Healthcare Sex Abuse Lawsuits?

If you stayed at a treatment facility that is part of Acadia’s network and experienced sexual abuse, the trusted sex abuse attorneys at Meirowitz & Wasserberg can help you file a lawsuit.
Reports of Sex Abuse at Acadia Treatment Facilities
In recent years, allegations of sexual abuse have emerged at Acadia-operated centers across the country.
Lawsuit allegations and reported issues within Acadia facilities include:
- Sexual abuse, grooming and assault by staff members
- Failure to supervise residents and protect them from abuse
- Retaliation against those who reported abuse
Some of these facilities are now closed, but new Acadia abuse lawsuits are still being filed.
Illinois Sexual Abuse Cases
Two former residents of the Timberline Knolls mental health center in Illinois filed lawsuits claiming that an aide raped them. According to The New York Times, the aide had been hired despite a criminal record including domestic violence and gun charges.
Acadia closed the Timberline Knolls facility in 2025. In its reporting about the facility’s closure, CBS News said the facility had been the subject of sexual abuse allegations dating back to 2018.
The Lemont Police Department had received reports of sexual assault or abuse from patients, many of whom were juveniles, on at least eight occasions since 2020, according to the CBS News report.
Michigan Sexual Abuse Cases
In 2025, CBS News reported that three women filed a lawsuit claiming a supervisor at an Acadia youth treatment center in Detroit sexually abused them as teens.
That lawsuit argues that other staff members were aware of the abuse at the Detroit Behavioral Institute. The plaintiffs also allege that the supervisor retaliated against the teens for reporting it, using other residents to bully and attack them.
The Detroit facility eventually closed.
New Mexico Sexual Abuse Cases
A New Mexico youth treatment facility was closed after facing abuse allegations in 2019. According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, Desert Hills of New Mexico was closed by the state that year following numerous allegations of abuse, including sexual assault.
One lawsuit involved claims that a boy was groomed and sexually abused by a behavioral health technician while staying at the facility.
The Nashville Post reported at the time that several similar lawsuits were filed involving sexual abuse at Desert Hills, claiming the facility and Acadia failed to protect patients from sexual abuse.
In 2023, Acadia agreed to pay $400 million to resolve some claims involving Desert Hills.
Pennsylvania Sexual Abuse Cases
In addition to lawsuits claiming that Acadia did not do enough to protect its patients from staff abuse, there have also been reports of abuse between patients.
Northcentralpa.com reported that, in 2023, a patient at an Acadia-owned White Deer Run facility in Pennsylvania was jailed for allegedly sexually assaulting a female patient.
Utah Sexual Abuse Cases
A FOX 13 investigation for the Utah-based Acadia facility Highland Ridge Hospital found that police investigated 33 calls to the center in a three-year span, five of which involved sexual assault.
