About Pleural Disease
The pleura is a thin sheet of tissue that wraps around your lungs and lines the inside of the chest cavity. It has multiple layers with thin spaces in between, typically filled with a small amount of fluid to help the layers interact with each other as you breathe in and out. Issues with the pleura such as inflammation, excess fluid or buildup of air, gas or blood in the pleural space can result in serious diseases. The pleural disease can arise from inhaling toxins — namely, asbestos — that move into the pleural space. Over the span of years, these harmful particles can develop into mesothelioma, a type of terminal cancer of the lungs, heart or abdomen.
Pleural disease from asbestos exposure is common in workers exposed to the substance in the 1900s. Shipyards, construction companies, and many other businesses regularly integrated asbestos into building materials for its fire-resistant properties. For decades, workers breathed in harmful asbestos particles without realizing the risk of pleural disease and other related harms. There is currently no cure for pleural mesothelioma.
Pleural disease can severely impair lung function, making it difficult to breathe during everyday tasks and exercise. It can cause chest pain and coughing, as well as inflammation of the lungs and the development of more serious lung conditions. Scarring of the pleural tissues, from breathing in asbestos or other harmful substances, can lead to pleural mesothelioma. This is a type of cancer that stems from chronic inflammation of the pleural lining, eventually causing abnormal growth of pleura cells and tumor formation.
