The Dangers of Paxil

Paxil (also sold under the brand names Aropax, Brisdelle, Pexeva, Sereupin, and Seroxat) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that patients take orally. It works by restoring the balance of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter that regulates mood and controls sleep, appetite, and social behavior. Scientists have linked low serotonin levels to depression and other disorders. Manufacturers created Paxil to regulate serotonin in the brain to treat related psychiatric conditions.

When GSK marketed Paxil, it described it as a non-habit-forming drug. Investigations have found evidence, however, that shows the manufacturer knew about the potential for dependency, addiction, and misuse as early as 1993. Patients can experience withdrawal from Paxil, with severe symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and irritability. In 2006, the first wave of lawsuits against GSK for this misrepresentation settled during a multidistrict litigation for $160 million. This was the first of many lawsuits against GSK to come.

Today, lawsuits and class actions against the manufacturers of Paxil have alleged that the company failed to warn and intentionally misrepresented the drug, causing injuries and birth defects to thousands of unsuspecting patients. Alleged damages include increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in young users, birth defects (mainly heart defects) in use by pregnant women in the first trimester, and increased death rate among female users. Plaintiffs have accused GSK of withholding important information about the drug, illegally promoting it to consumers, and submitting incomplete and dishonest data about Paxil. Could You Join a Paxil Class Action?

Through personal injury lawsuits and class actions, GSK has had to pay billions of dollars in recovery to injured patients. The drug manufacturer also lost an antitrust claim in which it had to pay a $3 billion fine. Injured patients allege that GlaxoSmithKline knowingly and illegally advertised Paxil as safe for treating depression in children, even though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only approved it in patients 18 and older. If you believe you have grounds to file a lawsuit or join an ongoing class action against GSK for taking Paxil or one of its other forms, contact a New Jersey Paxil attorney at our law firm.
