New York Proton Pump Inhibitors Attorney

A proton pump inhibitor, or PPI, is a classification of drugs that scientists created to reduce gastric acid production. PPIs can provide relief for heartburn by significantly reducing the amount of acid in the glands lining the stomach. The most common PPIs on the market are Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid. These drugs are available by prescription and over-the-counter. Millions of Americans currently take some type of proton pump inhibitor. Unfortunately, many report adverse reactions to the drug. If you’re experiencing an illness or injury you believe relates to a PPI you’ve taken, visit Meirowitz & Wasserberg, LLP, of New York City for legal counsel.

The Risks Of PPIs

Heartburn is a type of pain that occurs when stomach acid splashes into the esophagus. PPIs work well to reduce the amount of acid lining the stomach and therefore the amount of heartburn the user experiences. However, stomach acid has important uses as well. Reducing the amount of stomach acid too much can increase the risk of infections from bacteria in foods. It can also limit the absorption of important vitamins and minerals. PPI drugs on the market have warning labels that list risks such as for certain infections, pneumonia, heart palpitations, and fractures, yet they do not address potential long-term risks.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published several warnings regarding PPIs and health issues such as diarrhea, low magnesium levels and fractures of the hip, wrist and spine. These are not new issues, but they can potentially lead to lawsuits if the warning label on the PPI did not provide adequate information about these known risks. Two recent studies have brought to light troubling new information about the long-term effects of taking proton pump inhibitors. Extended use of these drugs may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease and dementia.

One of the studies showed a 20-50% higher risk of chronic kidney disease in those who took PPIs compared to those who did not take the medication. The study showed the amount of time the patient took the PPI directly correlated with the risk of harm. Those who took PPIs more than once per day were at the highest risk of kidney problems. Another study connected PPIs with an increased risk of heart attack by as much as 21%. Still, others link PPIs to cardiac birth defects when a mother uses the drug during pregnancy. Plaintiffs from around the country are coming forward with complaints of PPI-related issues in the pursuit of just compensation.
